ASBMR is a premier professional, scientific and medical society established to bring together clinical and experimental scientists involved in in-depth study in bone and mineral metabolism. The Society has more than 15,000 members who are doctors, scientists and health care professionals. ASBMR encourages and promotes research in the musculoskeletal field through annual scientific meetings and articles published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research®, the Primer on Metabolic Bone Diseases and Disorders of Mineral Metabolism. The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research has the highest impact factor in osteoporosis and it only publishes important work in the field. ASBMR also has a strong influence on the government's medical and scientific bodies as well as interaction with other medical societies.

The title of Fellow, equivalent to "Academician", is conferred upon scientists who have made outstanding contributions to osteoporosis research internationally. The ASBMR holds an election for the title Fellow through a four-step process. Candidates must be nominated by their colleagues; and when accepted, the candidate prepares a dossier of scientific achievements and contributions to the field, as well as intellectual leadership; and the international standing in science. The dossier is then reviewed by 6 professors. Based on the 6 reviews, the ASBMR Board will decide to present the Fellow award.
