Modern linguistics – Theory and Practice

The seminar is about the concept of Generative Grammar (GG) including (i) main ideas and GG sources, (ii) method of working as a scientific theory built on conventions of natural sciences (to distinguish from those of social sciences and humanities). Consequently, a specific phenomenon in Vietnamese is analysed. The seminar, on the other hand, offers an introduction on Computational Linguistics – an interdisciplinary field of Linguistics and Computation; Vietnamese Computational Linguistics and its application in education, e.g. teaching foreign languages to Vietnamese, teaching Vietnamese to foreigners, designing curricula, compiling dictionary, assessing linguistic competence, and checking plagiarism.
