Charles University from Czech Republic visited and worked with Ton Duc Thang University

On the evening of November 10th, 2017, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic, Sir Vítězslav Grepl and his wife, , together with Martin Kovář, Vice-Chancellor of Charles University, Czech Republic paid a working visit to Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU).

Charles University, which was founded in 1348, is the oldest university in Eastern Europe, and also one of the oldest universities in Europe. Charles University is ranked between 201 and 250 place in the rankings of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The university trains more than 50,000 students (including approximately 9,000 international students) in the fields of Medicine, Pharmacy, Art, Law and Humanities.

At the meeting, Prof. Le Vinh Danh, President of TDTU proposed five collaborative programs with Charles University, including the Charles University’s program to train faculty members in the Vietnamese Studies and Culture sector as well as a three-year training course in Czech and one year in Vietnam for students studying Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies at Charles University so that learners can receive degrees from both universities. In Czech Republic, Vietnamese community has been recognized as a 14th Ethnic Minority and it was ranked 4th in population after Czech, Slovak, and Polish. Therefore, the need to learn Vietnamese and preserve the culture of Vietnam is growing.

Prof. Martin Kovář was delighted with the five proposals from TDTU. He said that all five programs are feasible and necessary for Charles University. The two sides agreed to prepare MOUs as well as detailed cooperation agreements for each program so that the two Principals will officially sign the agreement in March 2018. In the meantime, detailed issues concerning the cooperation will be finalized.

After the working session, the Vice-Chancellor of Charles University, Ambassador and Delegates visited TDTU's library, lab system, dormitory and sports facilities. The cooperation between TDTU and Charles University is a new step towards the goal of cooperating with the TOP 500 University in the world.
